RMIT Journalism Society
The Journalism Society offers a variety of events and experiences throughout the year for all RMIT Journalism students. These initiatives are based on our three guiding principles: Opportunity, Networking & Development.
Opportunities
Provide members with access to industry experiences and publishing pathways through the society's partners.
The executive team has achieved this through:
- producing a live election broadcast, VicVotes 2022, supported by RMITV.
- facilitating radio broadcast pathways for members with SYN Media.
- partnering with Catalyst magazine on its expansion of news coverage.
- referring members to commentate the Ninja Challenge League finals.
- taking volunteers behind the scenes of the 2022 Jill Singer Lecture.
- enabling members to ask industry questions of journalist Patricia Karvelas.
Networking
Provide members with spaces to network with other students, career mentors and industry professionals.
The executive team has achieved this through:
- Comeback Trivia Night - the society's re-launch attended by 60+ people!
- The Night Out - enjoying Richmond and Fitzroy's nightlife with members.
- Jill Singer Lecture - getting members along to meet seasoned journalists!
- SYN Press Club - facilitating connections at panels and workshops.
- Pizza + Purpose - introducing members and co-designing 2023 initiatives.
- MACC & PRSA Networking - building connection across student disciplines.
- JSOC Drinks Night 2023 - get to know other Journalism students alongside drinks and food at the Oxford Scholar
Development
Provide members with access to facilitated development, training and mentorship in key news competencies.
The executive team has achieved this through:
- getting 10 per-cent off domestic Artbound Initiative programs for our members.
- getting 50 per-cent off SYN's bespoke radio news training launched in 2023.
- television news production mentorship as part of the society's election production.
