Guiding Principles

Guiding Principles

Opportunities, Networking and Development are the guiding principles of JSoc.

At our 2022 Annual General Meeting, members endorsed three guiding principles for JSoc following consultation. These principles are important because they let members know what they should expect from JSoc and keep the Executive Team accountable to you. We hope to meet and exceed every one of these in 2023

Opportunities

Get access to valuable real-world internship experiences through our range of industry partners.  Get your work published through a variety of trade and university outlets, including City Journal, Catalyst & more.

We achieved this in 2022 through:

  • producing a live election broadcast, VicVotes 2022, supported by RMITV.
  • a sports commentating opportunity for the Ninja Challenge League finals.
  • a volunteer opportunity behind the scenes of the 2022 Jill Singer Lecture.

Networking

Meet other students and develop your connections at our social events.  Make friends with our community of supportive peers and access mentorship opportunities through our study support groups.

We achieved this in 2022 through:

  • Comeback Trivia Night - our successful relaunch attended by 60+ people!
  • JSoc's Night Out - enjoying Richmond and Fitzroy's nightlife with members.
  • Jill Singer Lecture - getting members along to meet seasoned journalists!

Development

Take your learning further and get answers to the burning industry questions you've always had.  JSoc runs skill-building workshops, panels and more in conjunction with a variety of reciprocal partners.

We achieved this in 2022 through:

  • getting 10 per cent off domestic Artbound Initiative programs for our members.
  • getting 50 per cent off SYN inductions, bespoke training and new productions.
  • free television news production training as part of our election production.
